Gunmen kidnap Catholic priest in Delta community

Delta CP, Mohammed Ali

The priest in charge of St. John’s Catholic Church, Obinomba in Ukwuani Local Government Area of Delta State, has been abducted by unknown gunmen.

The priest, whose name was given as Rev. Fr. Harrison, was reportedly kidnapped on Monday about 8p.m. in a bad portion of the road in Oria-Abraka, Ethiope East Local Government Area of the state on his way back from Warri.

The kidnappers were said to have shot sporadically to scare away passers-by at the scene of the operation  before whisking away the cleric, abandoning his Toyota Highlander on the road.

Vigilante group members in the vicinity admitted they heard the sporadic gun shots but said there was no way they could have confronted them with the high caliber of weapons the kidnappers carried against their (vigilante’s) own poor arms and ammunition.

They said the abductors meant business as they expended their bullets without any care, adding that they were able to pick 15 shells from their AK-47 bullets.

Policemen from Abraka Division were said to have later visited the crime scene.
