Globacom takes second spot as Airtel drops to number three

Telecom operator, Globacom, has once again overtaken its rival, Airtel by garnering a 27.32 per cent telephone market share, while Airtel’s share of the market dropped to 26.73 percent.

This emerged from the latest statistics released by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) for the month of January.

The statistics also showed that the sector lost a total of a 3.94 million telephone subscribers across all networks in the month under review.

Globacom’s latest advancement closes the gap on MTN Nigeria which holds a 39.54 shares of the market.

Airtel and MTN lost over three million subscribers forcing the a dip in the industry’s telephone base to 199.86 million subscribers in January, against the 204.14 million subscribers recorded in the preceding month.

A break down of the loss showed that Airtel was the worst hit, as it lost a whopping 2.21 million subscribers, bring its subscriber base to 53.42 million in January, from the 55.64 million recorded in December 2020.

MTN ended January with 79,03 million, down from 80.76 million in December 2020.

Globacom lost 245,627 subscribers, dropping from 54.84 million subscribers it had in December last year to 54.59 million in the period under review.

9mobile lost the least number of subscribers at 173,567, reducing its subscriber base to 12.80 million in January, from the 12.98 million subscriber base it had in December 2020.

The massive loss of subscribers accounted for its displacement from the number two position which Globacom  now holds with 27.32 percent of market share. Airtel makes do with 26.73 percent of the market.

9mobile holds on to the remaining 6.41 percent of the market share.
