Police detain OPC members after arrest of ‘Fulani warlord’

The members of Oodua People’s Congress who apprehended Iskilu Wakili, the Fulani warlord believed to have been terrorising Ibarapa area have been detained.

The Oyo state police command said on Sunday the men were being detained in connection with arson and culpable homicide as a woman was burnt inside the house of Wakili.

The police command spokesperson, Gbenga Fadeyi, said Wakili had been moved to the hospital as a result of his “frail appearance and state of health”.

Recall that Wakili was arrested in Ibarapa area of Oyo State on Sunday after a gun fight with the OPC and other security groups.

Before his apprehension, Wakili had been on the lips of most people of Oke Ogun, with many of them accusing him of many atrocities, including kidnapping and murder.

Fadeyi in a statement on Sunday said the police was alerted to the invasion of Wakili’s house by the OPC around 9am on Sunday.

“While there, the house of the Wakili in question was set ablaze, while a female (the identity of whom is yet to be ascertained) was burnt in the fire and Wakili (about 75 years old and blind) with two other persons were picked up,” the statement added.

“The three of them are presently in the custody of the Police. The Commissioner of Police has directed that Wakili (due to his frail appearance and state of health), be moved to the hospital while others are being interrogated. Others being interrogated are the OPC members, involved in arson and murder.”

He said the command would prosecute whoever was found culpable in any crime regardless of their ethnic background.

He called on anyone with any case against the against Iskilu Wakili to report it to the State Criminal Investigation Department, (CID) Iyaganku Ibadan for discreet Investigation.
