Splinter group behind abduction of Zamfara female students – Sheik Gumi

Controversial Islamic scholar, Sheikh Gumi has revealed that the abductors of the Zamfara schoolgirls are not the same bandits he recently engaged with in Zamfara forests.

Gumi, who spoke with The Nation, said the abduction of Zamfara girls was carried out by a splinter group, outside the control of the bandit leaders he recently met.

When asked if he would visit those responsible for the Zamfara abduction and plea for the release of the schoolgirls, Sheikh Gumi said, “maybe”.

Gumi, who had courted public disapproval by calling the bandits peaceful people has met with some bandits in Sububu and Pakai forests.

Meanwhile in an update, the police has disclosed that about three-hundred and seventeen (317) students were abducted from the Government Girls Science Secondary School Jangebe in Jangebe, Zamfara State.

The students were kidnapped after armed gunmen stormed the school located within the Talata-Mafara local government area of the state on Friday morning.

Speaking to newsmen, Zamfara State Police Commissioner, CP Abutu Yaro, said a joint search and rescue operation had been dispatched to rescue the 317 students kidnapped

The commissioner said that the Force Commander, Operations, Hadarin Daji, Major General Aminu Bande, Brigade Commander 1 Brigade, Nigeria Army, Gusau, and other government officials led a heavily armed reinforcement team to Jangebe to complement the ongoing rescue mission in the locations where the students were believed to have been taken to.

The Commissioner appealed to parents and principal of the school to remain calm as he assured them of the students safety.
