President Muhammadu Buhari has warned that his government will take decisive action against ethnic violence in the country.
The president said he would protect all religious and ethnic groups in the country in line with his constitutional obligation.
Presidential spokesman, Garba Shehu, in a statement on Sunday said President Buhari was reacting to reports of violence in some parts of the country by ethnic and sectional groups.
The statement read: “The President condemned such violence and gave assurance that his government will act decisively to stop the spread of any such violence.”
President Buhari called on religious, traditional and political leaders to join hands with the Federal Government to douse ethnic tension and ensure everyone live in peace.
Ethnic tension has risen in some parts of the country, especially Oyo and Ogun States, lately following an upsurge in criminalities such as kidnapping, rape and murder believed to be perpetrated by renegade Fulani herdsmen.
There was a breakdown of law and order at Shasha Market in Ibadan on Saturday, forcing the state governor to impose a dusk to dawn curfew on the area. Some lives were reportedly lost while properties including market ware, houses and vehicles were destroyed.
