First Civilian Governor Of Lagos State, Lateef Jakande Dies At 91

The first civilian Governor of Lagos State, Alhaji Lateef Jakande is dead.

He died in the early hours of Thursday at the age of 91.

A trained journalist, Jakande, became governor of Lagos State from 1979 to 1983, and later was Minister of Works under the Sani Abacha military regime.

He was fondly called action governor because of  his administration’s unparalleled commitment to expanding Lagos’s infrastructure. Many of his legacies especially school and housing projects called Jakande Estates dot many local governments in the state till date.

It would be recalled that a former Military Governor of Lagos, Rear Admiral Ndubuisi Kanu also passed away about a month ago.
