A 27-year-old man, Mohammed Bello, was rescued by the Gombe State Police Command after attempting to take his own life by climbing a telecommunication mast in Gombe State.

According to a statement by the command’s spokesperson, DSP Buhari Abdullahi, Bello claimed he was being pursued by security agencies over unpaid debts and saw no other option but to end his life.

The incident occurred on March 8, 2025, when the police received a distress call regarding an unidentified individual who had scaled an MTN mast at Maimala Buni Street in Gombe LGA and refused to come down.

Upon receiving the report, the Divisional Police Officer of Pantami Division promptly deployed officers to the scene.

Authorities engaged Bello in conversation, during which he revealed that his financial troubles stemmed from unpaid debts reported by two creditors. He expressed his fear of being arrested and preferred suicide over facing his obligations.

A respected community leader, Katukan Gombe, intervened and assured Bello that his debts would be settled. Following this reassurance, Bello agreed to descend safely from the mast.

After his safe rescue, Bello was taken into police custody, where his statement was recorded under caution.

The Gombe State Police Command commended the swift action of its officers and the role of community stakeholders in peacefully resolving the crisis.

“The Command urges the public to seek lawful and constructive solutions to financial difficulties. Help is always available, and individuals facing hardship are encouraged to reach out to appropriate support channels,” the statement read.
