The Abia State Police Command has launched a full-scale investigation following the grim discovery of a missing landlady’s body inside a 30-foot soakaway pit in Umueleghele, Isiala Ngwa South Local Government Area.
The Assistant Inspector General of Police and State Commissioner of Police, AIG Wilfred Afolabi, confirmed the ongoing investigation on Friday while briefing journalists on recent command operations.
The victim’s disappearance had initially sparked widespread anxiety across the community, with residents assuming she had travelled before realising she had been missing for several days without a trace.
Speaking on condition of anonymity, a community source revealed that the traditional ruler was alerted, prompting local youths and a town crier to search farms, bushes, and unfinished buildings across Umueleghele.
The search ended abruptly when her remains were spotted inside a deep soakaway pit located within a neighbour’s compound.
Tension has mounted in the area following local allegations that the deceased was involved in a heated land dispute prior to her disappearance.
Community members alleged she had repeatedly refused to sell a portion of her land to a local resident, whom they suspect of involvement in her death.
Residents further claimed that acid had been poured into the soakaway pit and that portions of her remains were missing upon recovery, raising fears of a ritual murder.
However, law enforcement authorities emphasised that these claims remain unverified, stating that forensic examinations and homicide investigations are underway to establish the exact cause of death and track down those responsible.
