A 13-year-old girl, Hasana Bulus, has died barely 24 hours after regaining freedom from a seven-month ordeal in bandits’ captivity in Kaduna State.

The teenager was among five surviving victims released on November 1, 2026, following their violent abduction from Awon village in Kachia Local Government Area on April 20, 2026.

Armed terror groups had originally demanded an exorbitant ransom of N300 million alongside 23 motorcycles for the hostages’ release, outrightly rejecting smaller contributions raised by the impoverished rural community and threatening to starve the captives.

Journalist Reuben Buhari and community leader Speaker Jethro Daniel confirmed that Hasana was rushed to a medical facility in Kachia immediately upon release.

However, she succumbed to extreme physical exhaustion, severe malnutrition, and internal complications on November 3 while receiving emergency treatment.

Community sources revealed that Hasana’s death reflects a broader humanitarian crisis unfolding across Southern Kaduna, where captives are subjected to prolonged starvation and harsh weather conditions in dense forest camps. Multiple victims from the same Awon abduction—including young children, pregnant women, and elderly villagers—died in captivity before any rescue or release deal could be brokered.

Speaking on the tragedy, Speaker Jethro Daniel decried the psychological and physical horrors inflicted on young victims in rural communities, noting that seven months of extreme trauma proved fatal for the young girl despite her eventual release.

The incident has reignited intense public outrage and renewed calls from civil society groups demanding that state and federal security agencies intensify targeted counter-terrorism operations, secure remote forest corridors, and provide urgent medical rehabilitation for surviving kidnap victims across the region.
