The campaign convoy of Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), came under attack by suspected political thugs in Calabar, Cross River State, on Wednesday, November 4, 2026.

The hostility erupted shortly after Obi arrived in the state capital alongside his wife, Margaret, and running mate, Rabiu Kwankwaso, to attend a scheduled town hall meeting with party faithful and key stakeholders.

Media aide to the NDC candidate, Esther Umoh, raised the alarm on social media during the incident, reporting that armed thugs intercepted and attempted to disrupt the entourage. Security details attached to the convoy responded swiftly to clear a passage, preventing the situation from devolving into physical violence.

The disruption in Calabar comes amid heightened political activity in Cross River State, following previous security concerns in the region. It also marks the second high-profile disruption targeting Obi’s campaign within two months. A similar incident occurred in Benue State, where suspected thugs blocked the Gboko Road near the Air Force Base to deny the former Anambra State governor access into the state, leading law enforcement agencies to parade 46 suspects.

Security agencies in Cross River State are yet to issue an official statement regarding arrests or the extent of damage from the Calabar altercation. Meanwhile, party leaders have urged law enforcement to investigate the incident thoroughly and guarantee the safety of political candidates ahead of upcoming engagements.
