A viral video showing vigilantes physically assaulting a woman caught in a self-acclaimed prophet’s office has sparked widespread public outrage and intense criticism across social media.

The incident unfolded when a man reported seeing the woman enter the prophet’s office to local security guards and police officers, who subsequently raided the premises.

Footage recorded by the invading team revealed a mattress covered with cloth laid on the floor. The woman, who was dressed in jeans and a T-shirt, explained to the group that she had only entered the office to charge her mobile phone.

Her explanation was rejected by the men present, leading one of the individuals to slap her across the face while accusing her of lying.

The accusers insisted she was unclothed when they entered the room, with one voice in the recording expressing regret that they had allowed her to put on her clothes before filming the scene. The prophet involved reportedly fled the scene before the video was captured.

Social media reactions spark legal debate

The video has drawn sharp condemnation from netizens, who criticised the vigilantes for assaulting the woman while allowing the cleric to escape unpunished.

Many commentators argued that the vigilantes had no legal authority to inflict physical punishment or publicly humiliate the woman, regardless of the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Online users further noted that consensual adult relationships do not constitute a criminal offence under Nigerian law, urging the victim to seek legal redress against her attackers for physical assault and harassment.
