An 81-year-old traditional ruler in Imo State, Eze Dr. Godwin A.E.O. Agbanyim, has tied the knot with a young bride in a ceremony held in the Orlu Local Government Area.
The traditional ruler, who holds the title of Ezeahurukwe of Amike Ancient Kingdom, solemnised the union over the weekend.
News of the wedding surfaced online after a Facebook user, Anthony Ariwaozo, shared details and congratulatory messages celebrating the octogenarian monarch’s new marriage.
Monarch’s background and reign
Eze Agbanyim is one of the longest-serving traditional rulers in Orlu. In September 2025, the monarch celebrated his 80th birthday alongside his 53rd anniversary on the throne, having ascended the stool in 1972.
Amike Ancient Kingdom is an autonomous community located in the southern corridor of the Orlu Local Government Area, bordering Nkwerre. The kingdom is made up of several prominent villages, including Umuokwaraebika, Umudimodu, Umudimoha, and Umuowerre.
Trend of Nigerian monarchs marrying younger wives
Marriages between elderly traditional rulers and much younger brides remain a recurring trend across various traditional institutions in Nigeria.
Sociocultural analysts note that within traditional African royalty, polygamy and marrying younger wives are often viewed as symbols of status, prestige, and continuity for royal lineages.
Similar high-profile royal unions in Nigeria include the Alaafin of Oyo, the late Oba Lamidi Adeyemi III, who married several young wives during his decades-long reign, and the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi, who has contracted multiple royal marriages in recent years.
