A viral video showing a brutal physical altercation between a commercial bus driver and a female passenger over a ₦200 fare disagreement has sparked intense public debate online across Nigeria.
The incident, which reportedly began as a verbal argument over transport fares, quickly escalated into pushing, shoving, and a full-blown exchange of blows in broad daylight, attracting a crowd of onlookers and leaving both the bus and the passenger’s clothing torn.
Escalation, torn clothes, and a smashed windscreen
According to accounts from the narrator in the trending clip, the dispute erupted when the driver and the passenger failed to agree on a ₦200 difference in her transport fare.
As the argument intensified, physical violence broke out between the two. In the midst of the scuffle, the driver reportedly tore the woman’s gown, forcing her to hold the remnants of her dress with her hands to cover her bosom.
In retaliation for the assault and the destruction of her attire, the female passenger was captured in a subsequent clip smashing the windscreen of the driver’s commercial bus.
Police intervention on the scene
The chaotic scene was eventually interrupted by the arrival of an armed police officer wielding an AK-47 rifle, who attempted to intervene and de-escalate the situation.
In a follow-up video, the police officer is seen instructing the woman to step into the commercial bus as bystanders watch, in an apparent effort to transport both individuals involved in the brawl to a nearby police station for formal questioning and resolution.
Heated debate over conduct, gender, and public transport hostility
The viral footage has generated hundreds of reactions online, dividing internet users over issues ranging from driver professionalism and economic frustration to physical violence between men and women.
While some commenters blamed the driver for lack of professionalism and resorting to physical violence over a minor sum, others criticised the passenger for engaging in physical combat and damaging property.
