A tragic road accident along the Iwo Road–Ojoo Expressway in Ibadan, Oyo State, has claimed the lives of five people after a fully loaded 45,000-litre diesel tanker landed on several commercial vehicles.
The fatal incident occurred on Saturday, October 17, 2026, at the Aduloju Bus Stop, directly opposite Dominion City, leaving commuters and eyewitnesses in shock.
According to emergency response officials, the five victims comprised two adult males—including the driver of one of the commercial vehicles—and three female passengers.
Sudden brake failure leads to devastating crushed wreckage
A preliminary assessment conducted by the Oyo State Road Traffic Management Authority (OYRTMA) revealed that the heavy-duty tanker suffered a sudden and complete brake failure while travelling at high speed.
Unable to halt the massive vehicle, the driver lost control, causing the articulated tanker to swerve violently off its path and crush multiple Nissan Micra commercial sedans, instantly trapping the occupants within the crushed metal.
Emergency personnel worked frantically at the scene to extricate victims pinned inside the damaged commercial cars.
Five fatalities were confirmed on the spot, while security forces moved swiftly to prevent ignition risks from the spilt fuel.
Joint security teams clear wreckage and secure accident zone
Following the collision, the Oyo State Police Command deployed personnel to secure the perimeter against potential secondary disasters, such as fire outbreaks or fuel looting by bystanders.
Collaborative efforts between the Nigerian Police Force, the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), and OYRTMA restored order, redirected vehicular traffic, and cleared the dangerous obstruction from the busy expressway.
The bodies of the five deceased victims have been evacuated and deposited at the Adeoyo Hospital Mortuary for identification and formal procedures.
