‘Do this if your female partner dies in your home’ — Nigerian lawyer

A Nigerian legal practitioner has shared crucial legal advice advising men on how to handle situations where a female partner collapses, passes out, or dies unexpectedly in their home.
The legal advice comes amid growing public attention following several high-profile incidents involving women dying under unclear circumstances while visiting their partners.
Immediate medical evaluation must come first
The lawyer strongly advised against assuming a person has died or fleeing the scene out of fear, noting that fleeing automatically raises suspicion of guilt.
Instead, the first step must always be to seek immediate medical attention at a recognised hospital.
Medical experts point out that certain underlying health conditions or cardiovascular events can cause individuals to lose consciousness unexpectedly.
For instance, temporary loss of consciousness can occur due to conditions such as post-coital vasovagal syncope, where a sudden drop in heart rate and blood pressure causes fainting.
Only certified medical personnel can legally pronounce a person dead or provide emergency resuscitation.
Contact legal representation before police statement
If medical professionals confirm that the individual has passed away, the legal guide emphasises that the man should contact a qualified lawyer immediately before making any official statements.
Having legal representation ensures that an individual’s constitutional rights are protected and that all official statements made during the high-stress situation accurately reflect the facts without unintended misinterpretation.
Reporting to authorities and the legal process
Following consultation with a lawyer, the matter should be formally reported to the nearest police station to assist law enforcement in commencing an official investigation.
Under Nigerian law, an individual is presumed innocent until proven guilty by a competent court of law.
In cases involving sudden or unexplained deaths, authorities typically order a forensic autopsy to establish the precise biological cause of death.
The results of the autopsy play a central role in determining whether any criminal liability exists or if the death resulted from natural medical causes.
The lawyer noted, however, that individuals involved in such cases may be held in police custody while investigations and forensic assessments are carried out.
