A man in Enugu State has been taken into custody after remaining inside his apartment with the decomposing body of a woman for several days following a fatal altercation.
The circumstances surrounding the woman’s death remain under active police investigation, though initial statements from the suspect suggest a violent dispute occurred prior to her passing.
Suspect claims self-defence during altercation
According to preliminary reports and statements made by the suspect, the incident began as a confrontation inside his residence:
Allegations of attack: The man claimed the woman attacked him with a piece of wood while he was sleeping and allegedly threatened to infect him with HIV/AIDS.
Fatal outcome: The woman reportedly died inside the apartment during or shortly after the physical altercation.
Failure to report: Instead of notifying law enforcement or medical authorities, the suspect remained in the apartment alongside the woman’s remains for multiple days until the situation was uncovered.
Ongoing investigation
The Enugu State Police Command has commenced an inquiry to determine the cause of death, verify the identity of the deceased, and ascertain whether foul play or homicide was involved.
Pathologists are expected to conduct a post-mortem examination to establish the precise cause and timeline of death, while the suspect remains in police custody facing potential homicide charges pending official investigation findings.
