Senate President Godswill Akpabio has disclosed that his recent journey to Italy included a dedicated spiritual pilgrimage to offer prayers for Nigeria, its leaders, and the nation’s security challenges.
Akpabio explained that during his visit to Rome—which he highlighted as the center of Catholicism and global Christianity—he visited the mausoleum of Saint Padre Pio to conduct a special prayer session.
Prayers against insecurity, terrorism, and banditry
The Senate President revealed that he touched Saint Padre Pio’s mausoleum while interceding for the country’s socio-economic and security situations.
According to him, his prayers specifically targeted the prevailing security threats across the federation:
“I prayed against insecurity, that God should free us from insecurity. I prayed against banditry, I prayed against terrorism,” Akpabio stated.
He noted that he offered prayers for President Bola Tinubu, Vice President Kashim Shettima, members of the National Assembly, the Federal Executive Council, and all Nigerians.
Faith-driven conviction amidst public reaction
Acknowledging that public reactions to a politician’s pilgrimage might vary, Akpabio defended his actions as a sincere exercise of his personal faith.
He underscored that human efforts must be backed by divine intervention to overcome Nigeria’s current difficulties.
“It might look funny, but it’s the truth, because in our own religion, we believe that unless God protects the house, the watchmen watch in vain,” Akpabio said, describing the trip as a brief spiritual pilgrimage that he strongly believes will yield positive spiritual outcomes for the nation.
