A jury in London has been told how an Elizabeth Line employee Jorge Ortega, was beaten to death by a Nigerian, Ayodele Jamgbadi, who missed his train. on a train platform in late 2024.
Jorge Ortega died two days after an incident at Ilford station in east London on December 4, 2024.
Court proceedings revealed that Ortega was struck in the face with substantial force, causing him to fall backwards and strike his head against the concrete platform.
The accused, 30-year-old Ayodele Jamgbadi, faces charges related to the attack. However, proceedings at the Inner London Crown Court established that Jamgbadi was deemed mentally unwell and unfit to enter a plea or participate directly in a standard criminal trial.
Details of the trial of issues
Because the defendant is currently undergoing hospital treatment and unable to stand trial in the conventional manner, the legal process has transitioned to a trial of issues.
Under UK law, this procedure requires the jury to determine whether the accused physically committed the act in question, rather than establishing criminal intent or guilt.
Judge Benedict Kelleher informed the court of the defendant’s medical status, directing jurors to focus specifically on two core questions: whether Jamgbadi delivered the punch and whether that strike directly caused Ortega’s fatal injuries.
Prosecution evidence presented during the hearing included statement records from the arrest, where the suspect reportedly acknowledged striking the victim.
Sequence of events at Ilford station
Witness accounts and security footage detailed the events leading up to the incident. Ortega, who worked as a customer experience assistant for MTR Elizabeth Line and was a member of the RMT union, had approached the suspect alongside two colleagues after hearing loud disturbances near an advertising frame on the platform.
According to prosecutor Patrick Dennis, CCTV footage showed the suspect initially walking away from the station staff before turning around to approach Ortega directly. A colleague who witnessed the altercation described a high-impact strike near the victim’s temple, which immediately rendered Ortega unconscious as he fell backwards onto the platform floor.
A post-mortem examination conducted by pathologist Dr Michael Parsons concluded that the fatal traumatic brain injury was consistent with a heavy fall to the ground resulting from a standing height impact.
