President Bola Tinubu has expressed deep sadness over the passing of legendary actor and film executive Oludotun Baiyewu Jacobs, describing him as a towering giant of Nigeria’s creative sector whose influence reached across the globe.
The late actor’s passing at the age of 84 was announced on Wednesday, September 16, 2026, by his son, Olusoji Jacobs.
In an official press statement issued by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, President Tinubu extended his heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family, highlighting Jacobs’ immense contributions to the arts.
A legacy of dignity, discipline, and artistic excellence
President Tinubu noted that the veteran actor played a transformative role in professionalising the Nigerian film industry, serving as a mentor and benchmark for successive generations of actors, directors, and screenwriters.
The President praised Jacobs for his signature acting style, emphasising that his performances consistently elevated every script he touched:
“He was a giant of the Nigerian creative industry. His passing is a great loss to Nigeria, the African film industry and the global community of lovers of the performing arts. His remarkable body of work will continue to speak to generations yet unborn.”
Tinubu further emphasised that Jacobs was instrumental in establishing Nigeria’s cultural footprint on the international stage. He noted that the growth of Nollywood into a global economic and cultural force was made possible by pioneers who brought authenticity, passion, and international standards to their work.
From London stages to Nollywood royalty
The presidential tribute acknowledged Jacobs’ impressive career trajectory, which began with formal classical training at the prestigious Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA) in London, England.
After starring in numerous British television series, repertory theatre productions, and international feature films throughout the 1970s, Jacobs returned to Nigeria to help build the foundation of modern home-video cinema.
Over a career spanning more than five decades, his achievements were recognised with multiple prestigious accolades:
National Honour: Conferred with the title of Member of the Order of the Federal Republic (MFR) for his distinguished service to national culture.
Industry Accolades: Awarded the Africa Movie Academy Award (AMAA) for Best Actor in a Leading Role, alongside multiple Lifetime Achievement and Merit honours.

President Tinubu offered his prayers for the repose of the late actor’s soul and extended his sympathies to the entire entertainment industry.
He directed special words of comfort to Jacobs’ wife of over three decades, veteran actress Joke Silva, as well as their children, extended family, friends, and millions of fans mourning the iconic performer worldwide.
