The Lagos State Police Command has arrested four suspects in connection with the mob killing of Basit Kolade, who was attacked on Freeman Street, Lagos Island, just weeks before his wedding.
According to a statement by the Command spokesperson, Abimbola Adebisi, the violent incident occurred at approximately 10:40 PM on Wednesday, September 2, 2026.
Altercation escalates into mob action
Preliminary police investigations revealed that Kolade was driving a black Lexus SUV alongside his spouse from Ebute Metta toward Lagos Island when a commercial motorcycle collided with his vehicle from behind.
An argument broke out between Kolade and the motorcyclist. During the dispute, Kolade’s vehicle reportedly reversed and struck the motorcycle, causing the rider and the bike to fall to the ground.
The incident quickly drew a hostile crowd. A mob armed with dangerous weapons descended on Kolade, inflicting fatal injuries. While Kolade was being attacked, women in the neighborhood managed to rescue his spouse from the violence.
Kolade was rushed to the Lagos Island General Hospital, where he was confirmed dead. The motorcycle rider survived the incident and is currently receiving medical treatment.
Police apprehend four suspects, transfer case to SCID
The Lagos State Police Command identified the four arrested suspects asKhalid Rafiq, 20, Gafar Rahim, 21, Ibrahim Azeez, 33, and Samos Momoh, 21
Police Commissioner Fatai Tijani has ordered a full-scale investigation into the homicide and directed that all remaining culprits be brought to justice. The case has been officially transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Panti, Yaba, for further investigation and prosecution.
Adebisi emphasised that under Section 33 of the amended 1999 Constitution of Nigeria, every citizen’s fundamental right to life is protected, reassuring the public that the command will handle the investigation with complete thoroughness.
