The Lagos State University Students’ Union (LASUSU) has confirmed the arrest of a mother following a physical assault on Adebayo Oluwatumininu, a 300-level Nursing student at the LASU College of Medicine (LASUCOM), Ikeja.
The incident left the victim with severe facial and eye injuries, prompting immediate intervention by the student body and campus authorities.
Details of the incident and medical emergency
A viral video shows the woman assaulting Oluwatumininu severely in a room she shared with the woman’s daughter, identified as Hassan Temiloluwa.
The mother can be heard saying that the young woman slapped her. But it was speculated that the elder woman slapped the student first.
According to official updates released by LASUSU, the confrontation involved the mother of Hassan Temiloluwa, a Physiotherapy student who shared a residence/hostel arrangement in the campus area.
Following the physical assault, executive members of the Ikeja campus union rushed Oluwatumininu to the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH) for urgent medical evaluation and emergency treatment.
Union officials confirmed that a comprehensive medical assessment is being prepared regarding the extent of her eye trauma.
Legal action and disciplinary proceedings
The suspect’s mother was taken into police custody and faces formal arraignment in court on charges of physical assault and making violent threats.
Concurrently, the university management has initiated administrative measures against the student involved:
Criminal Prosecution: The suspect’s mother remains in police custody pending court proceedings.
University Disciplinary Panel: Hassan Temiloluwa has been summoned to appear before the University Disciplinary Committee to face administrative sanctions over her involvement in the incident.
LASUSU President Olipehin Ahmad Rufai and Public Relations Officer Jinadu Jamiu Ademola issued a joint statement strongly condemning the violence, emphasising that interpersonal disputes must never escalate to physical assault.
The student union commended the rapid response of LASU Management, the Centre for Gender-Based and Sexual Violence, and law enforcement agencies for taking swift action.
