A 30-year-old Nigerian national, Olukanyinsola Odebode, has been handed a 12-year extended sentence by a UK court following his conviction for rape and multiple counts of sexual assault, including offences committed while released on police bail.
Odebode was found guilty at Swansea Crown Court of one count of rape and two counts of assault by penetration following a full trial.
Offence details and bail breach
The court heard that the criminal acts occurred between June 2024 and September 2025 across two Welsh police jurisdictions.
Odebode initially raped and sexually assaulted a woman within the Gwent Police area. Following his arrest for those initial offences, he was released on bail.
While under bail conditions, he went on to commit further sexual assaults against a second woman in the Dyfed-Powys Police area.
Court proceedings and victim impact
During the sentencing hearing, prosecutor Mark Wyeth KC characterized Odebode as a persistent danger to women, emphasizing that his actions left both victims with severe, life-changing emotional and psychological trauma.
Prosecutors informed the court that since 2019, seven additional women had reported concerns regarding Odebode’s sexual behaviour to law enforcement.
These previous allegations included reports of rape, sexual assault, indecent exposure, and stalking, though none resulted in formal convictions.
Victim impact statements read in court highlighted how his predatory conduct deeply humiliated and degraded the women involved.
Sentencing structure and post-release restrictions
Presiding Judge Huw Rees ruled that an extended sentence was mandatory due to the severe, ongoing risk Odebode poses to the public.
The judge imposed a 12-year total extended sentence, structured as nine years of physical custody followed by three years on an extended licence.
Under UK sentencing guidelines for extended terms, Odebode must serve at least two-thirds of his nine-year custodial term in prison before becoming eligible to apply for release, which will remain subject to Parole Board assessment.
The court noted that Odebode had no prior criminal convictions before these proceedings. As part of his sentence, he has been placed on the UK Sex Offenders Register for life.
