
Detectives from the Kogi State Police Command have taken a 33-year-old man, identified as Jacob Irewa, into custody for allegedly setting his wife, Berida Irawo, on fire following an argument at their residence in Lokoja.
The incident took place on Friday, August 14, 2026, at Oworo Estate in the Felele area of the state capital.
Police reports indicate that the dispute began after the victim burned several items of her husband’s clothing, believing he no longer had use for them, without obtaining his prior approval.
Details of the attack and police action
Following the disagreement, Irewa reportedly threatened his wife before retrieving petrol from his motorcycle, pouring it over her, and setting her ablaze.
“The suspect was arrested by the B Division Surveillance Team after the incident was formally reported,” a police source confirmed, noting that Irewa confessed to the act during preliminary interrogation.
Victim’s condition and legal proceedings
The victim survived the assault and was rushed to Honey Gold Hospital in Felele, where she is currently receiving medical treatment for her injuries.
The Kogi State Police Command stated that full investigations into the attempted homicide are underway, after which the suspect will be formally arraigned in court.
