Operatives of the Lagos State Police Command have arrested the General Overseer of a church in the Isolo area of Lagos State for allegedly defiling two teenage daughters of a member of his congregation.
The arrest followed a petition submitted on July 28 by the victims’ father, who is a worshipper at the church.
Upon receiving the petition, the Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Fatai Tijani, directed the Gender Section of the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Yaba, to commence a comprehensive investigation into the allegations under the supervision of Deputy Commissioner of Police Dayo Akinbisehin.
According to a police source on Wednesday, the suspect reportedly initiated sexual abuse against the elder daughter when she was 13 years old, carrying out the acts within the church premises until she turned 16 and gained admission into the university.
Exposure and police intervention
The alleged abuse came to light after the cleric reportedly assaulted the victim’s 14-year-old sister on two separate occasions using manipulative scriptural doctrines to indoctrinate her.
Following the encounter, the younger sibling reported the incident to her parents. The disclosure prompted the older sister to open up about her years of alleged abuse by the cleric.
Police sources confirmed that the suspect was subsequently taken into custody, where he reportedly confessed to the crime during interrogation.
The command noted that investigations remain ongoing at the Gender Section of the SCID, Yaba, adding that the suspect will be arraigned in court as soon as investigative procedures are concluded.
