Tragedy struck Umuokereke Ngwa community in the Obingwa Local Government Area of Abia State on Saturday night after a woman, identified as Innocent Serah, allegedly stabbed her husband, Innocent Nwaoji, to death while he was asleep.

The incident has thrown the quiet community into mourning and shock, as neighbours disclosed that the couple had been married for barely eight months, having tied the knot in December 2025.

Speaking on the development on Sunday, a community member, David Amaraizu, expressed disbelief over the incident, stating that there was no known history of conflict between the couple.

“We are not aware of any disagreement between the couple before the incident,” Amaraizu said. “The woman has been arrested and is currently in police custody, while the deceased’s body has been deposited at a morgue.”

Police launch investigation

When contacted on Monday regarding the incident, the Police Public Relations Officer for the Abia State Police Command, Maureen Chinaka, promised to provide details after confirming the report.

“I will get back to you,” Chinaka stated. However, an official statement from the command was still expected as of press time.

The tragic event comes barely six months after a similar incident occurred in Umuahia, the Abia State capital, where the police command arrested a woman for allegedly stabbing her husband—an officer with the Nigerian Immigration Service—to death during a dispute over alleged infidelity.

Commenting on the earlier February 2026 case, the Commissioner of Police in the state, Danladi Isa, confirmed that the suspect in that incident was promptly arrested and transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department for homicide proceedings.
