Nigerian content creator Wasilat Olalere has debunked viral reports claiming she died after illegally recording the revered Oloolu masquerade in Ibadan, Oyo State, clarifying that she is alive, healthy, and innocent of the allegations.
Speaking on Lagelu FM’s current affairs program, Ibi Aye N Lo, Olalere addressed the rumours that spread rapidly across social media platforms following her participation in traditional appeasement ceremonies.
“I did not film Oloolu” — Creator sets the record straight
Olalere explained that the incident occurred on Thursday in the Oremeji area of Ibadan, where she was sitting outside her family’s shop. She maintained that the sacred masquerade did not even pass through her location at the time.
“I am not dead. I did not record the Oloolu masquerade,” Olalere stated during the broadcast. “May I never be implicated in such a thing because I did not film Oloolu. I only recorded what I saw and uploaded it on TikTok.”
According to her account:
She captured routine street activity, including a passing vehicle belonging to the Amotekun security outfit, rather than the masquerade itself.
Followers in her comment section advised her to remove the clip, which she did immediately.
Representatives visited her shop the following day regarding the allegations.
Wasilat Olalere undergoes cleansing at Ode Aje
To resolve the controversy and honour local customs following public concerns over the video, Olalere was escorted to the Ode Aje area of Ibadan to undergo traditional cleansing protocols.
During the ceremony, traditional custodians shaved her head, dressed her in red ceremonial attire, and slaughtered a goat to perform the necessary appeasement rites.
With the traditional rituals concluded, Olalere confirmed that the issue has been resolved and urged the public to disregard false claims regarding her well-being.
