Nigeria has lost one of its most distinguished elder statesmen and veteran public administrators, Alhaji Abubakar Alhaji, whose death was officially announced by his family on Thursday, July 30, 2026.
Popularly known as “Triple A,” the respected technocrat and aristocrat held several pivotal roles in Nigeria’s public service across multiple decades, serving at the highest levels of national economic planning and diplomacy.
A career defined by public service
Alhaji Abubakar Alhaji rose through the ranks of the Federal Civil Service, establishing a reputation as an exceptionally thoroughbred administrator.
1988: Appointed Minister of State for Budget and Planning.
1990–1991: Served as Nigeria’s Minister of Finance under the military administration of General Ibrahim Babangida, steering key economic policies during a critical transitional era.
Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF): Managed the coordination of federal cabinet operations and administrative machinery.
Diplomatic Service: Later served as Nigeria’s High Commissioner to the United Kingdom.
Beyond his contributions to national governance, he held revered traditional titles in the Sokoto Caliphate, serving as a key figure in northern Nigeria’s cultural and political leadership. Funeral arrangements and Islamic rites are expected to be announced by the family in Sokoto.
