A 45-year-old Nigerian national, Obinwa Obichukwu, has been sentenced to two years’ imprisonment in the United Kingdom following his conviction for sexually assaulting a lone woman twice at Euston railway station in London.
Obichukwu, a resident of Armstrong Close, Hertfordshire, was handed the prison term at Inner London Crown Court following a trial where a jury found him guilty on two counts of sexual assault.
In addition to serving time behind bars, the court imposed a 10-year Sexual Harm Prevention Order on Obichukwu and mandated that his details remain on the UK sex offenders register for a decade.
Distressing sequence of events
Details provided by the British Transport Police (BTP) revealed that the assault occurred on the evening of August 20, 2023, as the victim was walking towards Euston station along Euston Road.
Investigators stated that Obichukwu initially approached the woman, asking what music she was listening to before putting his arm around her shoulder and asking her to come home with him. When she continued walking, he persistently grabbed her hand and declared his love for her.
The encounter escalated at the station entrance, where Obichukwu physically blocked her path and sexually assaulted her for the first time.
Undeterred when the victim attempted to escape down the escalators towards the London Underground platforms, Obichukwu followed her and launched a second sexual assault near the ticket barriers. The victim managed to push him off, escape the area, and report the attack to law enforcement.
Obinwa Obichukwu denies, but CCTV seals his fate
British Transport Police officers tracked Obichukwu to his Hertfordshire residence using station surveillance footage.
Despite claiming during police interrogations and trial proceedings that the encounter was consensual, jury members rejected his claims after viewing CCTV evidence that corroborated the victim’s account.
Detective Constable Daniel Burke of the British Transport Police described Obichukwu as a predator who intentionally targeted a vulnerable commuter.
“Obinwa Obichukwu is a sexual predator who targeted a lone woman and attacked her at a busy London station,” Burke stated. “He claimed his assault was consensual and took his case to trial, but fortunately the jury saw straight through his lies, and he’s now behind bars where he belongs.”
