Army colonel shot dead in Abuja residence after fighting off kidnappers

Tragedy has struck the Federal Capital Territory following the death of a senior military intelligence officer, Colonel Abdussalam A. Ude, who was killed by armed assailants at his residence in the Kurudu area of Abuja.
The incident occurred at approximately 10:45 p.m. on Monday, July 27, 2026, at the Phase 5 Army Housing Estate in Kurudu.
Ambushed upon arrival
According to security sources and an official statement issued by the Defence Intelligence Agency (DIA), Colonel Ude was ambushed shortly after pulling into his driveway. The gunmen opened fire as he alighted from his vehicle and attempted to forcibly abduct him.
Rather than yield to his attackers, the senior officer resisted the abduction attempt despite being heavily outnumbered. In the resulting confrontation, the assailants shot him multiple times at close range, killing him at the scene.
Three other occupants of the premises—the officer’s wife, driver, and security guard—also sustained gunshot injuries during the violent encounter. They were rushed to a nearby medical facility and are currently receiving treatment.
DIA confirms investigation
Confirming the attack in an official statement, the Defence Intelligence Agency expressed deep sorrow over the loss of Colonel Ude, describing him as an exceptionally dedicated officer with a distinguished record in national defence and counter-terrorism.
“Security and Law Enforcement Agencies have commenced a full investigation into the incident, and every effort is being made to identify, arrest and prosecute those responsible,” stated Acting Assistant Director of Protocol, J.E. Oti.
Prior to his death, Colonel Ude had served in several vital military intelligence and counter-insurgency operations across Nigeria’s North-East, as well as specialised international assignments in Chad and France. He was reportedly due for promotion to the rank of Brigadier General next year.
