Sir Keir Starmer has stepped down as the United Kingdom’s prime minister, declaring that his “work is done” as he officially handed over leadership to his successor, Andy Burnham, after serving for two years.
Speaking outside 10 Downing Street on Monday, Starmer reflected on his tenure and expressed satisfaction with what his administration had accomplished during its time in office.
“I go with good grace, I go with a smile, and I go proud of everything that we have achieved,” Starmer said in his farewell remarks.
The departing Labour leader also publicly pledged his support for Burnham, who is set to lead the party and the country into its next phase.
After delivering his address, Starmer travelled to Buckingham Palace, where he formally submitted his resignation to King Charles III.
In a statement, Buckingham Palace confirmed the development, saying: “Sir Keir Starmer MP had an audience of The King this morning and tendered his resignation as Prime Minister and First Lord of the Treasury, which His Majesty was graciously pleased to accept.”
The palace also noted that Lady Starmer was received by the King during the audience.
Burnham, who emerged as Labour Party leader on Friday, was subsequently invited by King Charles III to form a new government, officially becoming the United Kingdom’s new prime minister.
The new prime minister is expected to deliver his inaugural speech outside Downing Street before announcing key appointments to his Cabinet.
Ahead of the transition, prisons minister Lord Timpson resigned on Monday as Burnham prepared to unveil his new administration.
