A heavy cloud of grief has overshadowed the national celebration surrounding the successful rescue of the abducted Oriire school children, following military confirmation that a brilliant 28-year-old Nigerian Army officer, Lieutenant Felix Ademe Isaac, was killed during the tactical jungle operation.

The young lieutenant paid the supreme price on Friday evening, July 10, 2026, while leading an elite infantry unit into the dense terrain of the Old Oyo National Park to neutralise an Al-Qaeda-affiliated terrorist cell and liberate the 44 surviving students and academic staff.

In line with strict military traditions regarding combat casualties, the gallant officer was laid to rest the same day with full military honours, leaving behind a devastated family and a mourning nation.

The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) had previously hinted at tactical casualties within the ranks of the joint task force during the high-stakes jungle raid.

In an official briefing detailing the zero-ransom operation, the military high command explained that specialised measures were taken to shield the children from crossfire, which exposed the infantrymen to direct enemy fire.

“It suffices to note that the operations were carefully planned and executed to avoid collateral damage and to equally ensure that the innocent children and teachers were safely rescued. However, there were some casualties on the part of the security forces,” the Army statement read.

Lieutenant Isaac’s unit bore the brunt of the initial tactical assault when they directly engaged the heavily armed bandits who had held the students hostage for 56 agonising days.

While two other soldiers survived their gunshot wounds and were airlifted for emergency medical care, Lieutenant Isaac succumbed to his injuries on the battlefield.

A nation in mourning

As news of the young officer’s identity broke on Sunday, an outpouring of emotional tributes flooded social media networks.

Millions of Nigerians praised his selflessness, noting that the joy of the rescued families was bought with the precious life of a young patriot.

Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde, who had earlier expressed profound gratitude to the service commanders during an interview from Bauchi State, specifically acknowledged the immense sacrifices made by the frontline troops.

Reacting to the tragedy, civic group Oyo Affairs posted: “Here is one of the officers Governor Seyi Makinde mentioned, who paid the supreme sacrifice while trying to rescue the abducted Oriire teachers and schoolchildren. May his soul rest in peace. 💔”

Another citizen, writing under the handle Sir Kay, remarked, “Lieutenant F.A. Isaac was a gallant Army officer who paid the ultimate sacrifice during the 2026 operation to rescue abducted schoolchildren in Oyo State.”

A poignant tribute by online commentator TojuWes summed up the bittersweet victory: “While others celebrate the return of the hostages, his family mourns. 💔 Rest easy, soldier.”

The Nigerian Army has assured that the families of the fallen heroes will receive immediate comprehensive welfare support, maintaining that Lieutenant Isaac’s bravery prevented what could have easily turned into a prolonged, national hostage tragedy.
