A deeply emotional video of a young Nigerian makeup artist expressing severe regret over her decision to relocate abroad has gone viral, sparking widespread debate across social media platforms regarding the harsh realities of the Japa phenomenon.

In the trending clip, the unidentified lady wept as she lamented that the economic reality she encountered outside the shores of Nigeria was completely different from the glamorous, highly lucrative picture painted to her by promoters of international migration.

The standard struggles of modern migrants have increasingly dominated online spaces, but her testimony struck a chord due to the significant personal sacrifices she made to secure her travel exit.

She did not state where she relocated to, but from the background, it appears it is another African country.

The makeup artist regrets abandoning education

The lady revealed that prior to her departure, she had a thriving career as a professional makeup artist and was on the verge of completing her educational pursuits.

She had reached the final stages of her National Diploma (ND) clearance and was preparing to transition into her Higher National Diploma (HND) program before being persuaded to abandon everything.

According to her, she was heavily influenced by individuals who convinced her that international destinations offered an automatic financial breakthrough compared to the economic struggles in Nigeria.

“They will just pack lies like this, lie to someone, telling you to leave your country for another country because money is there,” she stated in a mix of English and Nigerian Pidgin.

“I am supposed to do my clearance and go back for HND. Yes, I knew things were tough, making me come here to look for money, but all these things are lies they are lying.”

A warning to prospective migrants

Visibly frustrated and exhausted by the undisclosed hardships she is currently facing, the beautician urged other Nigerians currently planning their relocation paths to look beyond social media hype and carry out strict independent research.

“Before you leave your country to go anywhere, check well because I don’t understand why. I just want to go back to my country. I just want to go back to Nigeria because wetin I dey see no be wetin dem tell me (what I am experiencing is not what I was promised). I am tired,” she added.

The emotional video has triggered intense conversations online, splitting digital citizens into polarised camps.

While some commenters sympathised with her over the mental and systemic shock many new migrants face due to high taxation, loneliness, and lack of immediate professional placement, others chided her for lack of resilience, arguing that adjusting to foreign economic systems takes considerable time and documentation.
