A heavy combined security force has been deployed to the Ojoo axis of Ibadan, Oyo State, following a violent youth clash that has reportedly left at least two people dead and completely disrupted commercial and vehicular activities.

The unrest, which began on Tuesday, July 7, 2026, and spilt over into Wednesday, has paralysed traffic along one of the capital’s most critical transport corridors.

A failed pos transaction in Ojoo

According to local eyewitnesses, the deadly crisis originated from a seemingly minor financial dispute between a commercial tricycle (Keke) rider and a Point of Sale (POS) operator in the Ojoo area.

The disagreement reportedly stemmed from a failed transaction blamed on network downtime.

An argument quickly deteriorated into a physical confrontation, during which the tricycle rider was allegedly killed.

The situation deteriorated further by Wednesday morning as retaliatory violence erupted across the community.

A second fatality—identified by residents as a young boy—was recorded as groups of youths clashed in the streets, forcing traders to abandon their shops and commuters to flee the area.

An eyewitness captured in a viral video explained that the killed keke operator offered to leave his tricycle behind while they resolved the issue, but his assailants did not listen.

He alleged that they stabbed him to death, and when he and other youths paid the assailants a visit to resolve the issue amicably, they brought out guns.

The man claimed they shot at them, and the bullet hit a boy who was going to buy food, and he died. He added that he was also shot, but the bullet did not penetrate because of what he had swallowed.

The aggrieved man claimed a police officer told the opposing youths, said to be from a part of the country, to shoot at them.

Emergency traffic protocols and security saturation

In response to the chaos, the Oyo State Road Traffic Management Authority (OYRTMA) issued an emergency traffic advisory, warning motorists of severe gridlock and advising them to seek alternative routes out of the Ojoo corridor.

Joint security patrol vans have since taken up strategic positions across the hot spots to prevent further reprisal attacks.

The Deputy Governor of Oyo State, Barrister Bayo Lawal, visited the scene of the unrest on Wednesday afternoon to assess the damage and calm frayed nerves.

Addressing residents, Lawal condemned the breakdown of law and order and assured the community that the state government would ensure all perpetrators are brought to justice.

The Oyo State Police Command has stated that an investigation into the root causes of the clash is fully underway, while urging residents to remain calm and cooperate with personnel on the ground.
