Human rights activist Harrison Gwamnishu has shared an emotional update showing the remarkable transformation of Mrs Amarachi Okechi, a widow who survived a brutal assault after being accused of witchcraft in Abia State a few years ago.

The update has touched the hearts of many across social media, serving as a powerful reminder of resilience and gratitude.

From public humiliation to a life of recovery

In September 2022, a distressing video went viral showing youths in Umueghu, Amaegbuato autonomous community, Nkpa, in the Bende Local Government Area of Abia State, tying up Mrs Okechi and publicly flogging her.

The severe assault stemmed from an allegation made by her late husband’s sister-in-law, who accused the widow of practising witchcraft.

Following the public outcry sparked by the footage, Gwamnishu intervened immediately, travelling from Asaba to Umuahia to rescue her.

Mrs Okechi was subsequently hospitalised, and the former First Lady of Abia State, Mrs Nkechi Ikpeazu, also stepped in to support her rehabilitation. Gwamnishu later relocated the widow to a safe shelter in Delta State to help her rebuild her life.

An unexpected act of gratitude amidst personal struggles

Reflecting on the journey, Gwamnishu shared a new video of Mrs Okechi looking healthy, vibrant, and full of life.

Along with the footage, the activist opened up about his own recent financial and personal challenges, noting that he had to scale back his philanthropic efforts due to hardship.

“In 2024, life became difficult for me,” Gwamnishu revealed. “I had to call many of the people I had helped over the years and told them I could no longer carry everyone’s burden.”

He admitted that while many of those he previously assisted stopped reaching out once his support paused, Mrs Okechi remained a faithful exception.

Gwamnishu expressed how deeply he was moved to wake up to a video of the elderly widow praying fervently for his well-being.

“Watching that video melted my heart,” he said, adding that her gesture restored his faith in genuine gratitude and human kindness.

He concluded with a message of encouragement to his followers, urging them never to stop doing good, even when appreciation seems rare.
