Days after graphic, explicit videos allegedly involving Bishop James Ogwo of the Oyoyo Jesus Outreach Ministry flooded the internet, fresh revelations from residents and former congregants indicate that the embattled cleric is still actively running church services in Enugu.
Despite the heavy online moral backlash, insiders and neighbours report that Bishop Ogwo has successfully split public opinion and retained his core followers by aggressively pushing an “AI-generated deepfake” defence line, coupled with his long-standing reputation for highly accurate prophetic ministry.
“He is still moving around with full confidence”
While mainstream social media spaces continue to call for accountability, local neighbours in Enugu have expressed deep frustration over how the scandal is being managed internally within the church premises.
Commenting on the ongoing situation, a local resident, Joy Onyinye, whose house is situated close to the ministry, revealed that the viral footage has not halted operations.
“His church is close to my house in Enugu. The annoying part is that this man has brainwashed his members by telling them it’s an AI video. He is still having service in the church and moving around with full confidence,” Onyinye disclosed.
The power of prophecy: Why members are defending him
The primary reason many congregants are choosing to believe the “AI frame-up” defence stems from the Bishop’s decades-long track record of intense spiritual demonstrations and accurate predictions.
Sharing a shocking personal encounter, a woman identified as Princess Immaculate detailed how her husband sent her the viral footage, leaving her paralysed with shock because of her personal history with the cleric.
“I was shocked because a friend once invited me to his church around last year,” she stated. “The prophecy the man gave to my friend came to pass. Omo, things dey happen oo.”
Supporting this perspective, another former attendee from his early days in Enugu, Cynthia Ijeoma, confirmed that the Bishop possessed undeniable spiritual gifts, regardless of his personal lifestyle.
“I know this man about 8 to 10 years ago in Enugu,” Ijeoma wrote. “Then in Enugu, this man can see oooo! He will even tell you the address, phone number, name, and the particular person that is fighting you.”
She noted, however, that rumours of his continuous infidelity eventually forced him to relocate from Enugu to Aba and Lagos before his recent return.
James Ogwo and a history of miracles
Digging deeper into his roots, older acquaintances have traced Bishop Ogwo’s ministerial journey back over three decades to Abia State, revealing that he has always been a flamboyant and polarising figure.
A native of the area, Humble ThankGod, recalled knowing the cleric as far back as 1991 during his primary school days at Ndielu Central School in Ugwueke.
“Those years, he was known and called Rev. Ogwo of ACMC (All Christian Miracle Centre),” ThankGod shared. “He was fond of performing miracles then. He was always coming home with a yellow Mercedes-Benz flat-boot that year. So this man still dey exist, as in his church still go far like this? Odikwa egwu ooooo (It is scary).”
The modern “AI defence” dilemma
Societal analysts observing the fallout note that the Oyoyo Jesus Ministry scandal highlights a dangerous new frontier in African religious circles.
By utilising the very real global rise of digital deepfakes as a blanket shield, controversial public figures can easily dismiss authentic, compromising evidence as machine-generated propaganda.
Those who know his office opined that the scenes captured in some clips were clearly from his office, not a hotel room.
The activities appear self-recorded, with the participants smiling into the camera held out by the man at various points in their interactions.
Some of the clips allegedly showed the man in a threesome, while some showed him in intimacy with elderly women, according to those who have seen all the clips.
It is not clear how the clips leaked, but some accounts indicated that it was from a technician that the man’s Personal Assistant gave the cleric’s old phone to for repairs.
With Bishop James Ogwo maintaining his innocence and safely insulated by a congregation that values his prophetic accuracy over digital evidence, the line between spiritual devotion and psychological brainwashing in modern ministries remains incredibly thin.
