US issues fresh warning to Nigerians over visa violations as immigration rules tighten

The United States Mission in Nigeria has issued a fresh warning to citizens travelling to the US, urging strict compliance with all immigration regulations and visa conditions amid tightening global border controls.
The Mission strongly advised students, workers, and temporary visitors to strictly respect the approved duration and terms of their stay, warning that any violations could permanently compromise their future travel opportunities.
“Staying compliant with U.S. immigration laws isn’t just the right thing to do — it protects your future and keeps opportunities open for Nigerian travellers,” the Mission stated in its advisory.
The advisory was shared on the Mission’s official social media handles as part of an ongoing public enlightenment campaign aimed at educating travellers on the serious legal implications of visa overstays and status violations.
The warnings come at a time of heightened scrutiny under the current US administration.
United States immigration authorities have significantly expanded enforcement actions, recently dismantling several international networks and revoking hundreds of visas belonging to individuals found to have breached temporary entry terms or misrepresented the primary purpose of their travel.
The US Mission further urged Nigerians to ensure that their travel documents remain valid throughout their stay and to avoid any personal or professional actions that could put their legal residency status at risk.
“Compliance with immigration rules benefits both travellers and the host country,” the advisory added, emphasising that adherence to the guidelines helps maintain integrity in the visa system and safeguards long-term travel, study, and career opportunities for law-abiding Nigerians.
