The Abia State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of a 37-year-old man, Agwu Ukpo, who will face arraignment for attempted murder following a brutal assault on a woman in the Ohafia Local Government Area.

The suspect was apprehended by operatives from the command’s Violent Crime Response Unit after a video showing the vicious attack went viral across social media platforms.

According to a statement released on Sunday by the Abia State Police Public Relations Officer, Maureen Chinaka, the violent altercation stems from a petty dispute involving a pot of soup. The victim has been identified as Amarachi Chinyere.

“Leveraging actionable intelligence, operatives of the Violent Crime Response Unit, Abia Command, have apprehended the suspect, who was captured in a viral video assaulting one Amarachi Chinyere over a dispute relating to a pot of soup,” Chinaka stated.

Ukpo, an indigene of Akanu Ohafia, is currently being held and interrogated at the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID).

The police command noted that formal charges bordering on severe assault and attempted murder will be slammed against him as soon as the discreet investigation is finalised.

Condemning the attack, the command labelled the incident a barbaric and inhumane act of domestic violence that will not be tolerated under any legal circumstances.

The PPRO re-emphasised the command’s strict stance against gender-based violence, warning members of the public to find peaceful avenues for conflict resolution or face the full wrath of the law.

This arrest follows a worrying uptick in severe domestic disputes recorded across the country over the last year, prompting human rights groups to call for swifter prosecution of perpetrators of physical abuse.
