A violent altercation between two brothers has left a 100-level freshman of the Federal University of Petroleum Resources, Effurun (FUPRE), dead.
The tragedy unfolded on the university campus Tuesday evening following a minor domestic disagreement.
The Vice-Chancellor of the institution, Professor Ezekiel Agbalagba, confirmed the development on Wednesday, June 17, 2026, describing the loss of life as deeply tragic.
Fatal escalation at Hostel C
According to campus sources, the incident occurred at approximately 6:00 PM outside Hostel C. The two brothers had reportedly been harbouring a long-running dispute, which reached a breaking point over an argument involving a pair of bathroom slippers.
The suspect, identified as the victim’s elder brother, Joshua, allegedly called the freshman to the rear section of the hostel building under the pretence of settling their issues.
Witnesses state that the confrontation quickly turned violent when the older brother pulled out a dagger, inflicting multiple stab wounds on the younger student before fleeing the immediate vicinity.
Effort to save him
Despite suffering severe, life-threatening injuries, the injured student managed to crawl toward a populated section of the hostel compound.
Fellow students discovered him lying in a pool of blood and immediately raised an alarm to secure emergency medical intervention.
Graphic images and footage of the rescue attempt quickly circulated across various student WhatsApp platforms and online media.
Management assures public of safety
While addressing journalists, Vice-Chancellor Professor Ezekiel Agbalagba emphasised that the tragedy was strictly an isolated incident between relatives rather than an act of broader campus cultism or external violence.
“The incident stemmed from a misunderstanding between two brothers from the same family,” Professor Agbalagba stated.
“Efforts are actively underway to locate the suspect and hand him over to the police. We are actively searching for him.”
The university management has reassured both parents and the student body that the campus remains calm, secure, and under full administrative control.
Security operatives are currently working alongside local police divisions to apprehend the fleeing suspect.
