‘I rejoice when some couples divorce’ — Comedian Bovi speaks on marriage

Popular Nigerian comedian and actor Bovi Ugboma has sparked conversations on social media after saying that he sometimes rejoices when some couples end their marriages.
The entertainer made the remarks during an interview with media personality Morayo Afolabi-Brown, where he spoke about the realities of marriage, personal well-being, and the increasing rate of marital separations.
According to Bovi, not every divorce should be viewed as a failure, arguing that some people leave marriages because they are no longer emotionally, mentally or physically at peace.
Explaining his position, the comedian said some relationships can become unhealthy environments for one or both partners, making separation a necessary step toward a better life.
“I celebrate when people get divorced because I feel it means one or both people were not breathing well in the marriage,” he said during the discussion.
His comments have generated mixed reactions online, with some social media users agreeing that ending a toxic relationship can be beneficial.
In contrast, others insisted that couples should make every effort to resolve their differences before choosing divorce.
Speaking further, Bovi reflected on his own marriage, acknowledging that married life comes with challenges and difficult moments.
The comedian noted that while his marriage has not always been easy, he believes no partner should intentionally make life unbearable for the other.
“My own marriage hasn’t been easy, but I would never make life difficult for anyone, and I wouldn’t want anyone to make my life difficult,” he stated.
Bovi has been married to Kris Asimonye since 2009. The couple share three children and is often regarded as one of the entertainment industry’s enduring celebrity families.
Over the years, the comedian has occasionally shared insights into marriage, emphasising the importance of patience, understanding and commitment in sustaining long-term relationships.
His latest remarks have reignited discussions about marriage, compatibility, mental well-being, and whether ending a troubled union should always be considered a negative outcome.
The comments come amid growing public conversations around divorce, particularly among celebrities, where issues of personal happiness and emotional health are increasingly being highlighted alongside traditional views on marriage.
