Residents of a community along the Ikom–Obudu Road in Cross River State have accused an elderly akara seller of allegedly mixing human waste with bean batter used for preparing akara.

The woman, who is said to be a well-known food vendor operating along Ani Street, became the centre of controversy after residents reportedly discovered a suspicious nylon bag among her food preparation materials on Friday, June 5, 2026.

According to eyewitness accounts, some customers and residents became suspicious and demanded to know the contents of the nylon bag, which they claimed the woman was trying to conceal.

Sources alleged that after repeated questioning, the bag was opened and its contents were found to be human faeces, sparking outrage among those present.

The development reportedly attracted a crowd of residents and customers, many of whom demanded an explanation from the vendor over the alleged discovery.

Witnesses claimed that during questioning, the woman admitted to mixing the substance with the bean paste used in making akara.

She allegedly told those present that she had engaged in the practice for an extended period.

According to the accounts circulating within the community, the woman further claimed that she was influenced by spiritual forces and believed the practice would help attract more customers to her business.

The allegation has generated widespread reactions among residents, with many expressing shock and concern over food safety and public health implications.

As of the time of filing this report, authorities had not released an official statement on the incident, and the claims had not been independently verified.

Efforts to obtain further details on whether any law enforcement or public health agency has launched an investigation were unsuccessful.

The incident has continued to attract attention on social media, where users have called for a thorough investigation to establish the facts surrounding the allegation and determine any potential health risks to members of the public.
