The Edo State Police Command has arrested a social media influencer, Uzebor Emmanuel, popularly known as “Aza Woman”, over allegations of spreading false information about a supposed mass kidnapping in Benin City, Edo State.

The arrest followed viral posts in which she allegedly claimed that about six persons were kidnapped from mini buses operating around the Aduwawa and Ikpoba Hill axis of the state capital.

According to the police, the suspect further alleged in her online posts that some victims were abducted and later escaped, while others reportedly regained freedom after paying ransom.

However, the police said preliminary investigations established that the claims were false and misleading, adding that no such mass abduction incident was recorded in the affected areas.

The command stated that the viral publication caused panic among residents and created unnecessary fear, stressing that it also had the potential to undermine public confidence in ongoing security operations.

Authorities warned that the deliberate spread of false security-related information is a serious offence, capable of triggering public disorder, inciting panic, and diverting security resources away from genuine threats.

“The security of a state should never be jeopardised for views, engagement, online relevance, or any other form of social media gratification,” the command warned in its statement.

The police added that the suspect will be charged in court upon completion of investigations.

Residents were also urged to verify sensitive information from credible sources before sharing, especially reports relating to crime and security, in order to prevent misinformation and public panic.
