A Nigerian man, Maxwell Oguanaya, has been charged with murder after another Nigerian national died from injuries sustained during a violent confrontation in south-east London.
The Metropolitan Police said 32-year-old Oguanaya was arrested in connection with the death of 41-year-old Taiwo Ekerin, who suffered a severe head injury during an altercation on Lewisham High Street.
Emergency services were called to the scene at approximately 4:40 a.m. on May 24 following reports of a disturbance involving two men. Responding officers found Ekerin seriously injured and immediately requested medical assistance.
Paramedics from the London Ambulance Service treated the victim at the scene before transporting him to hospital for specialist care.
Despite efforts by medical personnel, he later died from his injuries on May 30.
Authorities confirmed that Ekerin’s family has been informed of his death and is receiving support from specially trained officers.
Following an investigation into the incident, detectives arrested Oguanaya, a resident of Eastfield Road in Enfield, on June 4 on suspicion of murder. He was formally charged the next day and appeared before Ealing Magistrates’ Court on June 5.
The court ordered that he remain in custody pending further legal proceedings. He is expected to appear before the court again on June 9 as the case progresses.
Police said inquiries into the circumstances surrounding the fatal incident are continuing.
