A final-year student of the Federal University Lokoja, Sarah Idoko, has been found dead along the Lokoja–Abuja Highway in Kogi State, prompting a police investigation into the circumstances surrounding her death.

The incident occurred on Saturday night near the Crusher area along the Felele axis of Lokoja, where the deceased was reportedly dumped by unidentified individuals.

Eyewitnesses said a vehicle was seen stopping briefly at the location around 8 pm before speeding off. Shortly after, passers-by discovered the body by the roadside and alerted security operatives.

Initial confusion surrounded her identity after an ID card recovered at the scene suggested she was a student of Kogi State Polytechnic, Lokoja, enrolled in the Higher National Diploma programme in Office Technology Management for the 2024/2025 session.

However, authorities later clarified that she was a student of the Federal University, Lokoja.

The Kogi State Police Command confirmed that investigations had commenced to determine the cause of death and identify those responsible.

Commissioner of Police, Naziru Kankarofi, said the command was working to establish the full circumstances surrounding the incident, adding that updates would be made public once investigations progress. He also assured residents that efforts were underway to ensure justice is served.

The discovery has sparked concern among student groups in the state. The Association of Nigerian Female Students (Kogi State chapter) condemned the killing, describing it as tragic and unacceptable.

In a statement signed by its coordinator, Celina James, the group called on security agencies to conduct a thorough investigation and ensure the perpetrators are brought to justice.

It also urged authorities to strengthen security along the Felele corridor, a busy highway linking Lokoja and Abuja that has witnessed repeated safety concerns.

The group stressed that the incident highlights ongoing risks faced by students and residents in the area and called for urgent preventive measures.

Police say investigations are ongoing as the search for those responsible continues.
