The Osun State Police Command has commenced investigations into the shooting of the Accord Party Chairman in Osogbo Local Government Area, Asimiyu Ajibola, popularly known as Baba Isila, by gunmen on Wednesday night.
The incident, which has been described by authorities as an attempted murder, occurred around 9:50 pm at the MDS area of Osogbo, near the Osogbo Community Bank axis, causing panic among residents.
Eyewitnesses said the attackers, who were reportedly on a motorcycle, trailed a blue Toyota Corolla conveying Ajibola and his associates before opening fire on the vehicle.
The assailants allegedly fired repeatedly in what appeared to be a coordinated attack before fleeing the scene.
According to a source in the area, the victims managed to escape the gunfire and later ran to the Dugbe Divisional Police Headquarters for safety before the attackers disappeared.
Ajibola was subsequently rushed to the University of Osun Teaching Hospital, where he is receiving treatment. Medical officials confirmed he is in stable condition and responding to care.
Reacting to the attack, Osun State Commissioner for Information and Public Enlightenment, Kolapo Alimi, condemned the incident and urged security agencies to carry out a thorough investigation.
He stressed that the perpetrators must be identified and brought to justice, while noting that preliminary concerns point to possible political undertones.
The Osun State Police Command confirmed the attack in a statement issued on Thursday, saying tactical teams had been deployed to track down those responsible.
Police spokesperson DSP Abiodun Ojelabi said officers responded immediately after receiving a distress call and ensured the victim was evacuated for medical attention.
He added that forensic experts were already analysing evidence recovered from the scene as part of ongoing investigations.
Commissioner of Police, Ibrahim Gotan, also condemned the attack and ordered a full-scale probe, directing investigative units to deploy all available resources to apprehend the suspects.
Security agencies say efforts are ongoing to identify and arrest those behind the shooting, while assuring residents that the situation is under control.
