A 21-year-old man has drowned during a swimming outing with his girlfriend at Village Park in Keumbu, located in Kisii County, Kenya.
According to reports, the young man was having a fun time with his girlfriend in the shallow end of the swimming pool when he allegedly decided to venture into the deep end despite having prior swimming experience.
Eyewitnesses claimed the girlfriend stayed on the shallow end while the man moved to the deeper end.
What began as a leisure outing quickly turned tragic when the man reportedly started struggling and sank into the water without resurfacing.
Alarm was immediately raised, but there was no lifeguard at the swimming pool, and no expert swimmer was available to dive in.
By the time help came, it was too late.
A video of the incident showed the moment the young man was brought out of the pool, lifeless.
It was observed that the rescuers did not attempt to carry out any CPR to attempt to resuscitate him.
One person can be seen feeling his pulse on the wrist and the side of the neck before leaving the body on the ground.
The hysterical cries of a lady suspected to be the girlfriend can be heard in the background, being consoled by Good Samaritans.
The incident has also raised concerns about safety standards at the facility, with many criticising the absence of a lifeguard at the pool.
The heartbreaking loss has generated widespread reactions on social media, where many users have urged young people to avoid engaging in dangerous activities to impress others or gain approval from peers.
Others have called for stricter enforcement of safety measures at swimming pools and recreational centres, including ensuring that qualified lifeguards are present whenever facilities are open to the public.
