Suspected cultists allegedly chase, kill man inside church in Aba

A young man identified simply as Marky has been shot dead by suspected cultists in Aba, Abia State.
The killing reportedly occurred around 12:35 p.m. on May 24, 2026, near Opobo Junction in the Ogbor Hill area of the city.
According to reports, the attackers chased the victim before opening fire on him inside an Apostolic church where he had attempted to seek refuge.
An anti-cultism group, Confra Naija, alleged that the incident was connected to cult rivalry.
The organisation claimed that Marky had earlier gone out for sports activities at Opobo Junction before he was attacked while returning.
According to the group, the victim ran into the church after being shot, collapsing near the altar. The gunmen allegedly followed him inside the building and shot him again to ensure he died.
Confirming the incident, the spokesperson for the Abia State Police Command, DSP Maureen Chinaka, said the victim’s body had been recovered and deposited in a morgue for autopsy.
She explained that officers attached to the Eastern Ngwa Police Division received intelligence about the shooting while on patrol around Obikabia Junction.
According to Chinaka, a patrol team from the Ohuru Division responded to the distress call and found the deceased lying in a pool of blood at the scene.
“Preliminary investigation showed that the victim was being chased before he was shot,” she stated.
She added that the attackers continued shooting as the victim ran toward the church premises.
Police say investigations into the incident are ongoing as authorities work to identify and apprehend those responsible for the killing.
