Troops rescue man from mob over alleged attempted rape of student in Plateau

Troops of Sector 1 of Operation Enduring Peace have rescued a 25-year-old man from an angry mob following allegations that he attempted to sexually assault a secondary school student in Bassa Local Government Area of Plateau State.
The incident reportedly occurred around 3 pm on May 20, 2026, in the Agyingi area of Bassa, after residents were alerted to an alleged attack involving a female student of Government Secondary School (GSS) Bassa.
According to security sources, the suspect, identified as Abdulazeez Sani, allegedly accosted the student at a hotel within the community under circumstances that triggered outrage among residents and youths in the area.
The development reportedly led to a mob action as angry youths descended on the suspect and attempted to lynch him before security operatives intervened.
Troops attached to Operation Enduring Peace were said to have responded swiftly to the situation, rescued the suspect from the mob and restored calm to the community.
Security authorities said the prompt intervention prevented the situation from escalating into further violence.
The suspect was subsequently handed over to the Keystone Division in Bassa for investigation and possible prosecution.
Authorities have not released further details regarding the condition of the student involved, while investigations into the allegations are ongoing.
Residents have also called for a thorough investigation into the matter and appropriate legal action in line with the law.
