
Tension erupted at Community Secondary School, Odagwa, in Etche Local Government Area of Rivers State, after angry youths reportedly attacked teachers and staff members following an incident involving student discipline.
According to reports, the crisis began when a teacher allegedly “disciplined” two Senior Secondary School 3 (SS3) students said to have been disrupting classes with loud music during school hours.
The disciplinary action reportedly triggered outrage, after which the teacher was allegedly assaulted.
The situation then escalated further as some youths were said to have invaded the school premises, plunging the environment into chaos.
Teachers allegedly beaten, others flee for safety
Eyewitness accounts claimed that several staff members of the school were attacked and beaten during the incident, forcing some to flee into nearby bushes to escape the violence. Access roads leading out of the school were also reportedly blocked during the unrest.
Some teachers were said to have sustained varying degrees of injury, while concerns were raised over the safety and whereabouts of others following the attack.
Viral post sparks public concern
A Facebook user, David C. Oguzie, shared photos and a video allegedly linked to the incident, claiming that his sister was among those affected. In his post, he criticised the handling of the situation and called for government intervention.
“This happened at Community Secondary School Odagwa, Etche L.G.A. Please, government should do something about it because, if anything happens to her, hmm,” he wrote.
Calls for investigation
The incident has sparked concerns over rising cases of school violence and community interference in disciplinary matters within the education system. Residents are calling for a full investigation and improved security around public schools in the area.
Authorities in Rivers State have yet to issue an official statement on the incident at the time of filing this report.
