Twelve suspected cultists have been arrested in Edo State following intensified security operations after the killing of a student near the University of Benin (UNIBEN)

The Edo State Special Security Squad carried out coordinated raids across several locations in Benin City, including Ekosodin, Ugbowo axis, Airport Road, and Ogba-Evbuodia.

According to spokesperson Noah Idemudia, the operations led to the arrest of the suspects and the sealing of two apartments allegedly used for cult initiation activities.

Occupants of one of the properties reportedly resisted security entry, while another was found with shrines and suspected ritual items.

Authorities clarified that the arrested individuals were not directly linked to the killing near the UNIBEN gate, but were identified through intelligence as members of various cult groups.

The suspects were also found with alleged incriminating symbols during the raids.

The suspects have since been handed over to the Anti-Cultism Unit of the Nigeria Police Force in Edo State for profiling and further investigation.

Security officials say the crackdown is part of wider efforts to curb cult violence around tertiary institutions, especially in areas surrounding the University of Benin.
