Madonna University Nigeria has dismissed allegations linking the death of one of its students, Williams Fubara, to bullying, describing such claims as false and misleading.
In a statement released by its Office of the Director of Communications and Public Affairs, the institution said narratives circulating on social media suggesting that the student was assaulted on campus were “malicious” and aimed at damaging its reputation.
The university clarified that at no time was Fubara, or any other student, subjected to physical abuse within its premises.
It further explained that contrary to widespread online reports, the student did not die on campus. According to the institution, Fubara passed away at home during the Easter break.
“Mr. Fubara’s unfortunate passing occurred at his home during the Easter break, not within the university as has been falsely claimed,” the statement noted.
Addressing claims that the incident happened over the Easter weekend, the university pointed out inconsistencies, stating that students were not on campus at the time.
The management also disclosed that individuals responsible for spreading what it termed false narratives had been identified, with some allegedly admitting their roles and seeking forgiveness alongside their parents.
While expressing concern over the spread of unverified information, the university urged the public and media to exercise caution, warning that sensational reports could worsen the situation.
Despite its position, unverified social media accounts have continued to allege that the student may have faced prolonged bullying prior to his death, claims the institution insists are inaccurate.
The university extended condolences to the family of the deceased and confirmed it has established contact with them. It also revealed that a three-man delegation would attend the burial scheduled to take place in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.
Fubara, a 100-level Psychology student at the Okija campus, was reported to have died last Thursday, April 23, 2026.
